Gundabad Orc Archer

Gundabad Orc Archers are Gundabad Orcs that wield bows as well as knives at close combat. While they are often considered weaker than other Orc archers, if in many numbers they can be a strong opponent, especially if underestimated.

Spawning

Like their common brethren, Gundabad Orc Archers spawn by night across a wide swath of northern Middle-earth. Apart from their home biomes, the Misty Mountains and the Grey Mountains, they ravage much of Rhovanion and greater Eriador. West of the mountains, they spawn in the Northlands, Eriador, the Blue Mountains, Minhiriath, Midgewater, the Lone-lands, the Angle, the Trollshaws, the Ettenmoors, the Coldfells, Swanfleet, and Eregion. East of the mountains, they spawn in the Vales of Anduin, the Gladden Fields, the Field of Celebrant, the Mirkwood Mountains, the East Bight, northern and southern Wilderland, Dale, and the Iron Hills.

Like regular Gundabad Orcs, Gundabad Orc Archers only spawn in darkness in all of these biomes, meaning that they will only appear on the surface at night, though they can be found in dark areas, especially caves, day and night. While they can spawn alone, they are usually found in groups, which can be quite large. This can make mining in many northern biomes perilous for enemies of Gundabad unless they are well-prepared.

Gundabad Orc Archers can also be found in underground Orc Dungeons in many of these biomes, guarding chests of Orkish loot, as well as in and around Gundabad Camps.

Unlike all other Orkish factions, Gundabad Orcs do not have a biome in which they can spawn both day and night; each biome that they spawn in only allows spawning at night or in caves during the day.

Behaviour

Gundabad Orc Archers will attack any foes of Gundabad, be they players with negative Gundabad alignment or enemy NPCs. When an enemy approaches, archers will close until they're within ten blocks of their foe and then start shooting. If the enemy then closes to melee range, the archer will run, shooting at their target as they do, attempting to stay out of the range of melee weapons.

Like regular Gundabad Orcs, Gundabad Orc Archers prefer darkness, and in direct sunlight they are subjected to slowness and weakness effects, making them easier to fight in the daytime.

If a player's Gundabad alignment is -500 or lower, Gundabad Orc Archers will often flee from them in terror - but only when the player is facing them. If the player looks away, the fleeing Orcs will turn around and attack from behind. This does not apply to Gundabad Orc Archers that spawn in invasions or that are hired by players, which never flee regardless of an enemy player's alignment. Warg-Riders also do not flee, as the Wargs they are mounted on control their pathing.

Equipment

Like other Gundabad Orcs, Gundabad Orc Archers use a haphazard, randomized mix of equipment from different sets.

Strategy

  • If you want to avoid conflict with Orcs, make sure to sleep through the night when travelling through Orc territories.
  • When fighting Orc Archers, a shield is extremely useful to block arrows.
  • Try and get close enough for them to switch their weapon to a knife, which toggles on at shorter range. If you are at the right distance, they can't damage you with it.

Lore

Gundabad Orcs recieved their name for the sacking of a dwarven mountain fortress named Mount Gundabad during the Second Age.
